Trade Minister Roots for Trade Expansion And Industrial Skills Training in Dialogue With China

In a strategic move to boost economic ties between Uganda and China, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Hon. Francis Mwebesa held a dialogue with a delegation from the Chinese Embassy in Uganda with emphasis on strengthening trade, improving quality standards, and enhancing technical capacity in Uganda’s industrial sector.
Minister Mwebesa hosted the Chinese delegation led by Deputy Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Fan Xuechang at his office in Kampala.
He highlighted the vital role China plays in Uganda’s trade landscape. He lauded China’s support in scholarships and training programs that have upskilled Ugandan professionals and boosted industrial performance.
Mwebesa used the dialogue to push for improved market access for Uganda’s exports to China, specifically in agribusiness and textile manufacturing. He emphasized the need for mutual recognition between Ugandan and Chinese standards’ bodies to ensure smooth flow of quality goods. He further called for reduced trade barriers to mitigate the current trade imbalance between the two countries. Uganda’s exports to China are currently valued at $13.9 million worth of goods to China annually, while imports stand at $151 million.
The Deputy Ambassador Fan Xuechang reaffirmed China’s commitment to African trade development. He noted that under President Xi Jinping’s new measures, Uganda qualifies for zero-tariff export treatment. He highlighted the importance of joint efforts in resisting global sanctions and building a more self-reliant Ugandan economy.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Ms. Lynnete Bagonza noted that Uganda’s removal from AGOA highlights the urgency for Uganda to diversify markets. She noted that new partnerships, especially with China, will be central in driving economic resilience and GDP growth.
The meeting ended with a shared call for more industrial training and value addition efforts in Uganda’s key production sectors.
The visit signifies a strengthening of Uganda-China relations in pursuit of equitable trade and industrial progress.
