BUY UGANDA, BUILD UGANDA (BUBU)

• There was incessant demand by local manufactures to Government to develop and implement deliberate interventions to support them.
• Local supermarkets were dominated by imports which are similarly produced in Uganda
• There was continued negative mindset by locals that local products were unavailable and of poor quality
• Government infrastructure projects were dominated by imported cement, iron and steel products and foreign expatriates of low level skills e.g. drivers, cooks etc
• Cabinet passed the Policy in 2014 and it was launched in 2017 with the Strategy and Framework for Implementation

The following are the Objectives of the Policy:

• To promote the consumption of locally produced goods and services;
• To promote the use and conformity to quality standards by local products; and
• To develop capacity building programs for the local private sector.

The aim of the Policy is to enhance the domestic market share of local firms in the domestic market through public procurement and ordinary channels of commerce

• The Policy focuses on the following sectors where quality products are readily available and can sustainably be supplied by local (Uganda-based):
• Furniture; Leather and Leather Products; Legal Services
• Iron and steel products; Construction materials;
• Cement; Accounting and Auditing Services;
• Foods and beverages; Construction Services;
• Electric cables and conductors; Non-consultancy Services;
• Pharmaceuticals; Textiles; Legal Services.
