SACCA congress 23rd – 26th September 2012

African Confederation of Cooperative Savings & Credit Associations
ACCOSCA) in collaboration with Uganda cooperative savings and credit Union (UCSCU) is organising the 13th SACCA Congress to be held in Uganda from 23 – 26 September 2012. ACCOSCA a confederation of national associations of savings and credit cooperatives societies. Uganda is a member of ACCOSCA through Uganda Cooperative Savings and Credit Union (UCSCU) the National Union for Savings and credit cooperatives in country, is one of the members of ACCOSCA.

The Theme for the Conference is “Governance – Prosperity of Nations through the Cooperative Model”. The SACCA Congress aims at creating awareness of the cooperative model as an approach towards mitigating challenges facing the continent. This year’s event coincides with the International year of Cooperatives IYC) as declared by the UN general assembly due to the contribution of the sector towards development and attainment of the MDGs. The event will create an opportunity for SACCOs in Africa to climax the celebrations for the IYC. Involvement in this event will profile the unique role played by the governments in promoting cooperatives in Africa particularly Uganda. This event will go a long way in identifying challenges and mitigation measures aimed at strengthening the key players supporting development and growth of the sector.

UN international year of cooperatives

On 18th December 2009, the UN declared that 2012 would be the International Year of Co-operatives. By naming any given year as an international year, the UN draws attention to issues of global significance. Declaring 2012 an international year of cooperatives, is an acknowledgement by the international community that co-operatives drive the economy, respond to social change, are resilient to the global economic crisis and are successful in creating jobs in all sectors. Increase public awareness about co-operatives and their contributions to socio-economic development and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.
Promote the formation and growth of co-operatives.
Encourage governments to establish policies, laws and regulations conducive to the formation, growth and stability of co-operatives.
The Theme for the IYC 2012 is: “COOPERATIVE ENTERPRISES BUILD A BETTER WORLD”
